Effects of African Star Apple (Chrysophyllun Albidum Linn) Extracts on Growth and Yield of Two Maize Varieties in Ogbomosho, Nigeria.

Plant extracts are organic manures which are growth enhancer in crop production are suitable alternative to inorganic fertilizer. The use of Chrysophyllum albidum leaf and seed extracts have not been extensively explored in crop production. Therefore, the study was aimed to assess the effect of Chrysophyllum albidum Linn extracts on growth and yield of two varieties of maize in Ogbomoso. The experiment was conducted at the Teaching and Research Farm of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso. The experiment was laid in a factorial fitted into Randomised Complete Block Design replicated three times. There are three factors, Chrysophyllum albidum leaf extract (CLE) T1 and Chrysophyllum albidum seed extract (CSE) T2, two varieties of maize: Oba super 6 (v1) and Oba super 98 (v2) with 4 concentration levels (0v/v,10v/v,20v/v,30v/v). Plant growth variables were measured at interval of 2weeks for 8weeks. The variables taken were plant height, stem girth, number of leaves, leaf area, weight of cobs, fresh weight, grain yield, and maize husk. Datacollected were subjected to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and means were separated using Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% probability level. There were significant differences in all the growth parameters variables. Treatment 1 (CLE) are significant at both 30%) for V 1 155.6a and V2 171.03a enhanced the vegetative growth of the two maize varieties at all concentration. Fresh grain weight and maize grain were significant at (4.66a-d) with the application of Treatment 1 (CLE) but the maize cob was not affected. There is no correlation between the treatment applied and the rate, likewise the treatment applied, rate and varieties. The data suggests that the treatment applied does not have a significant effect on the rate, and this lack of correlation holds across different varieties. Therefore, the use of Chrysophyllum albidum leaf extract (CLE) at 30% is recommended for boosting the growth and yield of maize.
