Community’s Attitudes toward Conservation Effort and Sustainable Land Management in Shere Hills Forest Reserve, Jos, Nigeria

The rate at which trees are felled for charcoal production and timber in Shere hills forest reserve is alarming and hence the need to undertake this study to aid conservation planning and proper management of the forest reserve. The study evaluated community perception and attitudes towards the impact of deforestation on conservation efforts. Five communities around Shere hills forest reserve were purposefully selected and a total of one hundred and eighty (180) copies of structured questionnaire were administered to randomly selected farmers. Most people across the five communities strongly agree that conservation efforts are essential for the well-being of their communities (mean score - 4.35). Support for conservation activities and willingness to participate in afforestation projects were relatively high across communities (mean score – 4.33 and 4.01 respectively). Since there is positive attitude, it was recommended that government and other private and non-governmental organizations can collaborate with local communities to embark on afforestation projects in the study area,
